Testing Information
There are several opportunities students have to show competency in reading, writing, and math, to meet state licensure requirements.
- Have a Composite ACT score of 21 or higher;
- Have a Combined SAT score of 1100 or higher;
- Take the Praxis Core Academic Skills test;
- Take the CBEST test
Students who have the ACT or SAT scores above the requirement, will need to provide a copy of their scores to the program at the time of application. The scores must list the student’s name along with their scores.
The Praxis Core Academic Skills may be taken at one time on the same day, or by separately on different days. The California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) is not available to be taken all on one day, but must be taken separately.
Any of the above options are acceptable in order to apply to a teacher education programs.
If I need to take the Praxis or CBEST, how can I prepare?
Most students will feel prepared for the test after completing their core English and core Math classes. If students have a weakness in a particular area, they should prepare well in advance. There are several ways to prepare for the tests. The College of Education & Human Development has a faculty member who will set up individual time to help prepare students for testing. Students can also obtain testing information and support from the Student Success Center Advisors.

Where can I take the tests?
Although the University is not a test site, there are several testing centers in the Reno. The information about testing sites can be found on the Praxis and CBEST websites. Students may also choose a testing center outside of Reno, as the tests are given at various places around the state and country.
When should I take the tests?
Take the tests as soon as students have completed their core English and Math classes. We encourage students to keep an electronic copy of the test scores to submit with the program application, for licensure, and also for future reference throughout your teaching career. It is recommended the tests be taken no later than 8 weeks prior to the program application date, as it takes several weeks to process the scores. Students must have passing scores on all sections.
Can I retake a test?
Yes! Students can retake the tests as many times as necessary. Keep in mind that passing scores are required for program application. If students think they might not pass a test, taking the tests earlier are a better option.
