Move-in

Whether you are joining us for the first time or you are returning to the residence halls, we ask that you become familiar with the process for move-in, as it may look different from year to year.

Fall 2024 move-in

We are excited to collaborate with the Digital Wolf Pack Initiative, NevadaFIT and Wolf Card Office to host a centralized check-in process scheduled at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center during NevadaFIT Opening Weekend from August 15-17, 2024. This process for is for incoming First-Year Students (who all attend NevadaFIT) and transfer students choosing to participate in TransferFIT. All vehicles should park in the West Stadium Garage while checking in at the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center check-in location. Sophomore-and-above students will move in on August 23. See below for more information.

Incoming first-year NevadaFIT students and TransferFIT students

This move-in experience is for students who are new to the University, new to living on campus, and/or any student participating in NevadaFIT or TransferFIT (residents living in the Transfer LLC or living elsewhere on campus and opting into TransferFIT). This is part of the New Student Summer Experience program.

In order to check in for move-in, you will need to have an active WolfCard student ID. Please submit your photo to the WolfCard Office prior to your Orientation or no later than August 12, so you can pick up your ID at the residence hall and NevadaFit check-in.

Instructions to upload a photo for your WolfCard

Please log in to your and verify your housing assignment. You will need your building and room number. Based on your housing assignment, please see the table below for your check-in date and time at the centralized check-in location. You will drive your vehicle to the West Stadium Parking Garage, park, and then navigate to the centralized check-in location. Arriving at this time is critical to a successful, fast, and easy-as-possible move-in experience. The following considerations are taken into account when determining the move-in date and time:

  • Number of students on a floor or wing; and in a building
  • The proximity of being able to unload vehicles as close to the building as possible
  • Traffic flow around campus, especially with off-campus properties having students move in around the same time
  • Access to elevators, exterior and interior stairwells
  • Availability of moving carts to help you move-in
  • Coordinating iPad distribution for new students and capacity in the Knowledge Center (which centralized check-in will be held)

Failing to check in during the window below will likely cause delays for you to check in and/or we may ask you to return for another check-in time. Also, if you arrive on campus to check in after 4:30 p.m., or on Sunday, you will need to check in directly at your residence hall.

Sophomore-and-above students not participating in TransferFIT

August 23, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

This move-in experience is for students who identify as sophomores and above, or upper-division students, who are not participating in NevadaFIT or TransferFIT. More than likely, these students lived on campus last year and are returning to live on campus again, and/or they are new to campus and not participating in either NevadaFIT or TransferFIT, or they are living at Lake Tahoe.

If you identify in this category as a returning student, please check in at your residence hall on Friday, August 23, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. While you are welcome to check in after this time, please know there will be several activities occurring around campus in which you can participate, connect with friends and meet others and get this academic year off to a great start. Campbell-Friedman Hall, Canada Hall, and Prim Schultz are our only residence halls specifically for sophomore and above/upper-division students, so move-in for these buildings is Friday, August 23, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

For main campus residence halls, you will not be turned away if you check in prior to August 23, but please note your meal plan (if applicable) may not be active yet. For students living at Lake Tahoe (Campbell-Friedman and Prim-Schultz Halls), move-in will only be on Friday, August 23; arriving early is not available without expressed written permission from our department - please contact us at housing@unr.edu to request to move in prior to August 23.

Food options

  • The first meal in Pack Place for all students is dinner on Friday, August 23.
  • As part of NevadaFIT, incoming First Year students can eat in Pack Place from Thursday, August 15 through Thursday, August 22 (unless the NevadaFIT schedule states otherwise). Parents/families eat free in Pack Place when accompanied by their student.

  • Returning students (living on- or off- campus) can purchase a meal plan on the .

Tentative check-in times at centralized check-in location

After check-in, you will relocate your vehicle to your residence hall to move in.

Families with multiple vehicles will only be able to unload one vehicle at a time; the second vehicle must remain in the West Stadium Garage until the first vehicle has been removed from the unloading zone. Students with trailers, U-Haul trucks and RVs will need to move in after 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 1 p.m. Saturday.

Important details about move-in

  • Failure to arrive during your allotted time may cause delays upon your arrival on campus for check-in.
  • Moving carts are available for checkout at the building's front desk. If you prefer not to use community equipment, you may bring your own. Bringing your own equipment can expedite your move-in, considering the limited supply.
  • While family and friends are welcome to assist with moving in, please note that a larger group may slow access to stairwells and elevators.
  • Limited volunteers will be available to assist students, depending on availability.
  • Given that move-in typically occurs during hot weather, it's advisable to plan accordingly by wearing appropriate clothing and bringing water.
  • Residence hall check-in at the Knowledge Center ends at 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, and at noon on Saturday, to allow staff preparation for community meetings and events.
  • For arrivals between 4-5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, or between noon and 5 p.m. on Saturday, check in at the Knowledge Center for ID, NevadaFIT, and iPad, then proceed to your residence hall for check-in.
  • For arrivals after 5 p.m. on Thursday or Friday, check in at your residence hall front desk that evening, move in, and then visit the Knowledge Center the next day for ID, NevadaFIT, and iPad.
  • Arrivals between noon and 5 p.m. on Saturday should check in at the Knowledge Center before proceeding to their residence hall.
  • All students must check in by 5 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, for NevadaFIT and the Opening Ceremony.

Early arrival requests

Students who have a valid need to move into their fall housing assignment before the scheduled date may request an early arrival. Please note that due to the transition from summer programming to academic year student residency, it is extremely unlikely for students to be able to arrive prior to August 15.

To be eligible, a student must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • The student's on-campus employer requires them to start working before the start of the fall quarter.
  • The student is participating in a training or orientation program with a UNR program, department, or college before the start of the fall quarter.
  • The student is a university housing resident for the summer and is transitioning to an academic year assignment.
  • The student has a disability-related need to occupy their housing assignment earlier than their scheduled move-in date and has received support from the Disability Resource Center for early move-in.
  • The student's move-in date is scheduled to occur during a religious holiday. Please note: the academic calendars and move-in structure have been developed to avoid scheduling conflicts with major religious holidays.
  • Other exceptional needs may be considered on a case-by-case basis, subject to the review of a student’s housing community.

Request process

Eligible students (based on the above criteria) must connect with the leader of their academic or administrative unit, who will submit a request on the student's behalf to our department. Our staff will review these requests and communicate directly with the unit leader. Students should maintain consistent contact with their academic or administrative unit leader.

If a student is not connected with an academic or administrative unit and wants to submit an individual request, they should email housing@unr.edu and provide a detailed description (with corresponding documentation) of their requested early arrival date and reasoning. Our team will review these requests and notify the resident of the decision by email. Do not attempt to arrive early without having received approval from our staff via email.

Requests will be accepted from July 15 through August 6 and are subject to review and approval by our staff. Students will receive an email once a decision has been made regarding their early arrival request.

If the student’s request is approved, they are expected to arrive at their designated early arrival date and time. The per-night charge for early-arriving students is $38.93, which will be assessed to the student's MyNevada account. Additionally, these students must adhere to all move-in procedures and conduct rules.
