Minor in journalism
A journalism minor will prepare you to produce compelling, ethical media for whatever career you choose. Whether you become a lawyer, teacher, business owner, scientist or journalist, knowing how to write, produce audio and video and use social media professionally will help you communicate effectively and accurately to your audience.
Minor requirements
Select the year based on when you declared your journalism minor.
The minor requires completing 21 credits in Journalism – five required courses and six credits of upper-division journalism electives:
- JOUR 103 - Introduction to Media and Society (3 units)
- JOUR 107 - Media Writing (3 units)
- JOUR 108 - Media Design (3 units)
- JOUR 208 - Media Production (3 units)
- JOUR 305 - Media Ethics (3 units) also satisfies CO12
- Two upper-division (300 or 400-level) journalism electives (6 units)
You’ll need to complete JOUR 103, JOUR 107, JOUR 108 and JOUR 208 with a C or better and a combined GPA of 2.5 or higher. Once you have completed those classes, you’ll need to maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 in journalism to earn the minor.
