Training preparing the next generation of counseling professionals

Counseling Services is one of the largest non-degree granting mental health training programs in the state of Nevada and have been training masters, doctoral, and postdoctoral students for decades in social work, marriage and family therapy, and psychology. In the past ten years, our training program trained 95 future mental health professionals, many of whom are practicing in the State of Nevada. Our practicum program was awarded the Social Work Practicum Site of the year in 2017-2018 by the University's Social Work program. The University's Counseling Services doctoral psychology internship was granted accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2021 for the full 10 years.

Statement on dual relationships and trainee applicants

Counseling Services staff refrain from multiple relationships that would reasonably be expected to impair our objectivity, competence, or effectiveness, or could otherwise risk exploitation or harm to other persons in our professional work. To minimize the potential for harmful multiple relationships, former Counseling Services clients who apply for a training position at Counseling Services will not be considered for a position until a period of at least three years has elapsed since their last clinical service was received. This does not include a brief screening appointment that resulted in no further treatment.

Former clients who received services from us more than three years ago and who are interested in a position may have their application considered. Care will be taken to consider if the applicant could be put in a position where their previous therapist would have supervisory or administrative power with them, e.g. clinical supervisors, Director of Training, Director, Assistant Training Director, member of the Training Committee. If such a situation cannot be prevented, the applicant will be removed from consideration.
