Grant proposal budget training
A grant proposal budget is an estimate of project costs and a roadmap for the project resource needs. An important component of the grant proposal, the budget requires careful consideration to ensure compliance with the applicable rules and policies that govern sponsored project costs. To assist University sponsored project investigators in understanding the fundamentals of grant proposal budgeting, the training classes listed below are available.

Grant proposal budget preparation: This one hour class is recommended for University faculty and staff who prepare and/or work with grant proposal budgets. In this session, attendees will learn the fundamentals of grant proposal budgeting as well as grant financial compliance. Topics covered include the following:
- Purpose of a budget
- Legitimacy of costs
- Allowable costs
- Unallowable costs
- Budget restrictions
- Cost share/match
- Budget justification
NIH modular budget preparation: This one-hour training class is recommended for University faculty and staff who prepare grant proposals to the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that utilize the modular budget model. In this session, attendees will learn when and how to use the modular budget as well as the requirements of the modular budget.
Sponsored project cost share: This 90-minute training class is recommended for University faculty and staff who prepare and/or work with grant proposal budgets requiring cost share. Topics covered include the following:
- Cost share types
- Cost share sources
- Eligible/ineligible cost share expenditures
- Consequences of unmet cost share obligations
- Relevant University forms, policies and procedures
Program income on grants: This one-hour training class is recommended for University faculty and staff who work with grants that generate program income. Topics covered include the following:
- Program income explained
- Accrual of program income
- Sponsor treatment of program income
- Use of program income
- Management of program income
