The Reynolds School of Journalism is pleased to present the inaugural Lerude First Amendment Distinguished Lecturer, Justin Marceau, for a lecture on Tuesday, March 11, 2025. Marceau will present a talk entitled “Going Undercover: Investigative reporting and the law” and engage in discussion with Gabe Rottman of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press.

The lecture and forum will be held on Tuesday, March 11, 2025 in the Wells Fargo Auditorium in the ÍƼöÐÓ°ÉÔ´´ Knowledge Center. A reception with light refreshments will precede the talk at 5 p.m. and the program will begin at 6 p.m. Space is limited and online .

Marceau and Rottman will provide insight on public interest reporting techniques that push boundaries, and the risks and rewards that come along with extending robust legal protections for those reporters. They will also discuss emerging technologies and evolving professional standards that may affect investigative reporting practices.

Marceau is a law professor at the University of Denver where he specializes in constitutional law and criminal law. He has litigated on behalf of non-profits and individuals challenging anti-transparency laws in states across the country, including Utah, Idaho and Iowa, and he oversees a law clinic that is currently defending a number of whistleblowers who are being sued.

This inaugural lecturer forum is funded by Warren and Janet Lerude. Warren Lerude ('61), an emeritus professor at the Reynolds School of Journalism, has been instrumental in advancing press freedom both in Nevada and nationally. He led a team of three editorial writers to win the Pulitzer Prize when he was editor of the Reno Evening Gazette and Nevada State Journal. Support provided by the Lerude Family Endowment allows this event to be free open to the public.
