Three days of events planned leading up to Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service

The Center for Student Engagement encourages participation in this year's activities

This weekend we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his dedication toward social justice! Even though times may be different with our global and cultural pandemic, the Center for Student Engagement encourages you to participate in the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Whether you support a local organization such as the Northern Nevada Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Committee, or the Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society, or you participate in one of the African American Museum in Philadelphia’s workshops, we hope that you take the time to get involved!

Saturday, January 16, 2021 thru Monday, January 18, 2021

  • - To kick things off, we will open with a Dramatic Reading by Philadelphia's own Theatre in the X.
  • - Inspired by Martin Luther King’s legacy of equity, justice, and freedom, we will listen, reflect, create and share in order to move in the direction of our individual and shared dreams.
  • - Tune in every morning of MLK Weekend from 11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. to learn about our Transcribe-A-Thon! We thank you for becoming a digital volunteer!

  • - On Saturday, January 16th, you’re invited to join the African American Museum in Philadelphia for a special virtual screening and third episode premiere of filmmaker and activist Shuja Moore’s documentary series, Walkies.

  • - On Sunday, January 17, the African American Museum in Philadelphia convenes this special MLK Weekend reading and discussion featuring Philadelphia Poet Laureate Trapeta Mayson in conversation with noted author and fiction writer Jonathan Escoffery.
  • – The Northern Nevada Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Committee together with the Nevada Interfaith Association Present “Keep Moving Forward, We Aren’t Done Yet” 35th Interfaith Memorial Service.

  • - An intimate account of legendary U.S. Representative John Lewis’ life, legacy and more than 60 years of extraordinary activism — from the bold teenager on the front lines of the Civil Rights movement to the legislative powerhouse he was throughout his career.
  • - Nicole R. Fleetwood is Professor of American Studies and Art History at Rutgers University, New Brunswick. She is a writer, curator, and art critic whose interests are contemporary black diasporic art and visual culture, photography studies, art and public practice, performance studies, gender and feminist studies, black cultural history, creative nonfiction, prison abolition and carceral studies, and poverty studies.
  • – The Northern Nevada Black Cultural Awareness Society presents the first broadcasted Dr. King birthday celebration. Join us on the CW and Youtube to celebrate and honor, Dr. King, the late John Lewis, and many others.
