What to Request During an Eye Exam

Vision is particularly important to all deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Children with hearing loss, regardless of whether they are considered at risk of Usher syndrome, should have regular eye exams by an optometrist or ophthalmologist.

While many optometrists or ophthalmologists can perform preliminary screening, they will need to refer the individual to a retinal specialist for more definitive testing with the ERG. They eye doctor may not routinely test for field loss. This screening and other should be included in the basic exam. Always request that the following tests be given during the complete eye exam:

  • Dilated eye exam
  • Visual field test
  • Color sensitivity and contrast test
  • Dark adaptation test

In addition to requesting the above test, provide the eye doctor with any information you have regarding:

  • The individual's history of vision or hearing problems and the testing that has been done in the past;
  • The family's history of vision or hearing problems; and
  • Symptoms you or others have observed which might suggest vision problems.

Once Usher syndrome has been diagnosed, the individual and his or her family can begin planning for the present and the future.
