Summary
Dr. Joshua Anderson is an active performer, educator and advocate for new music. He currently serves as Associate Professor of Clarinet at the 推荐杏吧原创 School of Music and as Principal Clarinet with the Reno Philharmonic. A graduate of the University of Michigan, Yale University and the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, he has performed under the baton of artists such as Valery Gergiev, Peter Oundjian, John Adams and Krzysztof Penderecki. He has also given performances at numerous prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, the He Luting Concert Hall of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and the Jimo Ancient City Concert Hall. His performances span continents, with engagements in Europe, Asia, and North America, and he has been a featured artist at numerous international music festivals, including the Alpenkammermusik Festival, Thy Chamber Music Festival, Shenzhen Symphony Clarinet Festival and the Lanzhou International Art Festival.
Dr. Anderson is deeply committed to advancing contemporary clarinet repertoire and has been instrumental in commissioning and premiering over 100 works by living composers. As the Director of Programming for the Four Corners Ensemble, he continues to promote cross-cultural artistic exchange, with performances at Carnegie's Weill Recital Hall and the Polish Consulate General in New York City. His work with the Operation Opera Festival, currently housed at Sacramento State University, has led to the premieres of numerous chamber operas and art songs by emerging artists. He is also currently collaborating on an album of newly-composed chamber works by Reno-native Monica Houghton.
In addition to his performance career, Dr. Anderson has an extensive teaching portfolio, having served as an artist faculty member at international music festivals, including the Jimo International Music Festival in China and the Taishan International Music Camp. His pedagogical contributions are also reflected in his publications: The Clarinet Studio Companion, a comprehensive guide to collegiate clarinet study, and New 32, a collection of clarinet etudes by living composers.
Dr. Anderson is an active adjudicator, having judged competitions such as Nevada All-State, MTNA competition, Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestra competitions, Chamber Music Northwest’s Clarinet Competition, and the China Youth Competition at the Beijing Conservatory. He is a member of American Mensa and has served in leadership roles in various professional organizations, having hosted the International Clarinet Association Conference in Reno in 2022. Dr. Anderson's clarinet teachers include Deborah Chodacki, Anthony McGill, David Shifrin, Chad Burrow and Dan Gilbert.
