There are specific windows twice a year to submit your portfolio - February 1 to August 1 for fall/summer, or October 1 to December 1 for spring. Portfolios outside those date ranges will not be reviewed until the next period.
To attempt credit-by-exam, you'll submit a portfolio of your best writing to demonstrate you've mastered the English 102 skills. Clearly show your abilities in areas like analysis, research, and argumentation.
This option is available if your ACT/SAT scores placed you into 102, you completed 101 already, or took a similar writing course. Any current UNR degree-seeking students can try for 102 credit-by-exam.
Portfolios are evaluated in 2-3 weeks, but Admissions processing time is separate.
A few important things to know:
- You only get one attempt at credit-by-exam.
- Any plagiarized work means you fail and forfeit the $25 fee.
- Evidence of plagiarism goes in your file and to Student Conduct.
Submission instructions
Here are the key submission steps I would emphasize to a high school junior pursuing the English 102 credit-by-exam option:
- Start by emailing MyNevada to initiate the process. It will be reviewed to make sure credit-by-exam is appropriate, which can take 2+ weeks. Pay the $25 fee once approved.
- Review the Portfolio Guide below for helpful tips on putting together a strong submission.
- Choose 3-4 essays written in the last two years that showcase your best work.
- Write a detailed cover letter explaining why you deserve placement in 102 despite your test scores. Most importantly, connect your essays back to the specific English 101 learning outcomes. This letter is critical!
- Combine the cover letter and essays into one PDF labeled "Last Name_Placement_Portfolio.pdf." Make sure each essay is clearly labeled. Microsoft has instructions for .
- Submit the portfolio via the official .
- You'll receive results from the Core Writing reviewers by email. If you have any questions about the status of your submission, email Isis Lopez Aguilar, the first-year writing placement coordinator.
Also, be aware that portfolio results are only shared with the student, not parents or others, due to privacy regulations unless a FERPA waiver is provided.
