Summary

Dr. Berch Berberoglu is a Foundation Professor of Sociology and Emeritus in the Department of Sociology at the ÍƼöÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´. He has served as Founding Director of the Ozmen Institute for Global Studies from 2018 to 2021. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 1977. He has taught and conducted research at the ÍƼöÐÓ°ÉÔ­´´ for 45 years, during the period 1977-2022. He has served as Chair of the Department of Sociology on three different occasions, totaling 14 years, during the period 1993-2016, and as Director of the Graduate Program in Sociology for 25 years, from 1993 to 2018.

Dr. Berberoglu has written and edited 35 books and many articles. His recent books include Globalization in the 21st Century: Labor, Capital, and the State on a World Scale (2010); Beyond the Global Capitalist Crisis: The World Economy in Transition (2012), Political Sociology in a Global Era (2013), The Global Capitalist Crisis and Its Aftermath (2014), Social Theory: Classical and Contemporary— A Critical Perspective (2017), and The Palgrave Handbook of Social Movements, Revolution, and Social Transformation (2019).

His most recent books, The Global Rise of Authoritarianism in the 21st Century: Crisis of Neoliberal Globalization and the Nationalist Response (2021) and  America After Empire: The Vision for a New America in the 21st Century (2023) were published by Routledge and his latest book Class and Inequality in the United States (2024) was published by Emerald Publishing.

His areas of teaching and research interest include globalization, international political economy, social-economic development, class structure, political sociology, social movements and revolution, nationalism and ethnic conflict, class/race/gender, and comparative-historical sociology.

Dr. Berberoglu is the Series Editor for Palgrave Macmillan for the book series “Social Movements and Transformation,” Series Editor for Routledge for the book series “Globalization, Crises, and Change” and Series Editor for Emerald Publishing for the book series “Class and Inequality” and “State, Politics, and Society.”
