Nevada Public Health Training Center

The NVPHTC amplifies the public health workforce through innovative research and skill-based education. By implementing a variety of training opportunities and prioritizing needs of the public health workforce, the NVPHTC continues to address gaps and barriers within public health systems.

The NVPHTC is part of the Western Region Public Health Training Center and is housed within the School of Public Health at the 推荐杏吧原创. Our mission

The mission of the Nevada Public Health Training Center (NVPHTC) is to improve the competencies of aspiring and current public health professionals by researching, designing, implementing, and evaluating training programs which target prioritized educational and skill-based needs in the public health workforce.

Get to know the staff of the Nevada Public Health Training Center.

NVPHTC projects

We work with a range of community partners on topics that impact the health and well-being of Nevadans.

The NVPHTC assesses public health workforce needs at each affiliated health department and assists in the planning and development of training programs to meet identified needs.

  • Trains the public health workforce through face-to-face and distance-based learning opportunities
  • Arranges collaborative projects for faculty members and MPH students to enhance public health services to medically underserved communities
  • Establishes and strengthens field placements for MPH students in community settings to ensure the growth and knowledge of the future public health workforce

NVPHTC domains

Inspiring a future workforce

  • Pipeline Programs. We work to engage students into potential studies and careers within public health through community outreach and presentations with high school students, including the Washoe County Signature Academy.
  • Curriculum Mapping for Higher Education. We work collaboratively with partners, such as the State of Nevada Department of Education and Truckee Meadows Community College, on curriculum and competency development to provide a path to higher education and to reduce barriers to entering the field of public health.
  • Active Recruitment. Through outreach, marketing, and educational opportunities, we seek to actively recruit into our undergraduate and graduate programs, including our newer programs such as the 3+2 program (5 years to an MPH), online public health practice MPH program, and PhD program.
  • Internship Programs. We administer all SCHS undergraduate and graduate internship programs and actively engage our students with community projects that impact health.
  • Global Engagement. We administer international internships, special topics courses, research, and community engaged projects that bring the skills of our faculty and students to developing communities throughout the world.

Developing our current workforce

  • Public Health ECHO Clinics. We host monthly live web-based trainings on a variety of public health issues and topics. We build skills. We start conversations. We take action.
  • Online Training Modules. We develop a variety of web-based training modules on key public health competencies that are available free of charge.
  • Trainings, Conferences, Summits, and Events. We plan, implement, and evaluate a variety of trainings, conferences, summits and events to develop the capacity of the public health workforce in order to address current and emerging needs.
  • Public Health Workforce Development Survey. We assess the training and professional development needs of the public health workforce through the design, implementation, and analysis of targeted and tailored surveys.
