Importance of pursuing the designation of a Hispanic Serving Institution
May 6, 2024
As we begin the final few weeks of the spring semester, I hope that you all have an opportunity to take a few moments to reflect on the work that has been done this year. It has been a positive and productive time for our institution. The progress that we have made each day is due in no small measure to the care, support and understanding that all of you have continually demonstrated to one another. I hope the coming days, while busy, will also be a time to realize that the effort you’ve put forward has been worth it.
I am writing to express the importance and benefits of our institution pursuing the Department of Education’s designation of a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). As our educational landscape evolves, it is crucial for us to prioritize the diverse needs of our student body and to foster an inclusive and enriching environment. As stated in our Strategic Plan, “Wolf Pack Rising,” HSI is one of our top strategic priorities and marks a comprehensive University effort spanning several years. It is also important to note that this effort is part of our land-grant mission, which is to deliver education to all people, from all walks of life, throughout the state that we serve.
Hispanic Serving Institutions play a pivotal role in addressing the educational disparities that exist within our communities. By actively seeking and obtaining HSI status, we not only acknowledge the unique challenges faced by Hispanic students, but also commit to providing targeted support and resources to ensure their success.
With this historic designation, our University will have the following growth opportunities:
- Access to Federal Funding: Designation as an HSI opens doors to federal funding opportunities specifically earmarked for institutions serving a high percentage of Hispanic students. These funds can be crucial in improving infrastructure, expanding academic programs, and providing scholarships.
- Student Success Initiatives: As an HSI, we can implement targeted programs and support services tailored to the unique needs of Hispanic students. This includes mentorship programs, language support, and culturally relevant curriculum enhancements.
- Community Engagement: HSI status strengthens our ties with the local Hispanic community. It signals our commitment to inclusivity and encourages community members to see our institution as a place that values and supports their educational aspirations.
- Enhanced Reputation: Achieving HSI status is a mark of distinction that can enhance our institution's reputation. It demonstrates our commitment to equity and inclusion, attracting a wider pool of students seeking an education in a supportive and culturally aware environment.
Our pursuit of the HSI designation aligns with our institution's mission to provide quality education for all and will contribute to the overall success and satisfaction of the Wolf Pack Family.
I am pleased to share that we are launching our HSI task force, co-chaired by Vice President of Government and Community Engagement Michael Flores and Dr. Jafeth Sanchez, Director of the Latino Research Center. This task force will include representatives from across the University and will focus on assembling a strategic plan for how our institution will become a Hispanic Serving Institution.
I look forward to further discussions on the necessary steps and strategies to achieve this significant milestone for our institution. This designation is part of a broader effort throughout our entire institution to support our students in every facet of their experience here at the 推荐杏吧原创.
Go Pack!
Sincere regards,
