Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month
September 15, 2022
Dear Wolf Pack Family,
I hope this message finds you well and that you are having a productive and enriching semester.
Today, Thursday, Sept. 15, marks the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month. Throughout this month and continuing until Oct. 15, we will be honoring and celebrating the historically significant and ongoing achievements of the members of the Hispanic and Latino/a/x/e community. We also proudly celebrate and recognize the contributions, influence and achievements of our own Hispanic/Latinx faculty, staff, and students.
This month-long celebration also honors the strength of these diverse cultures throughout the United States. Nevada is the third most ethnically diverse state in the country, with about 40 percent of the state’s citizens identifying as Hispanic/Latinx. Our student enrollment continues to mirror this growing trend as well, with more than 22 percent of our undergraduate fulltime students identifying as Hispanic/Latinx.
Beginning with Saturday’s celebration of arts, family and Hispanic/Latinx heritage at 9 a.m. in the University Blue North Parking Lot, there will be a number of events held on our campus this month and into October to help commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Check the Hispanic Heritage Month portion of the University website for the latest information and details. Dr. Jafeth E. Sanchez, the Director of the University’s Latino Research Center, has written an excellent NSights blog post about “El Grito” and its significance. In the coming days there will be additional Hispanic Heritage Month content shared on NSights as well.
I encourage all of the Wolf Pack Family to learn more by participating in special programming and events on our campus, and in finding ways throughout the entire year to support, celebrate and acknowledge our students, faculty, staff as well as our friends and neighbors in our region who make our greater Hispanic/Latinx community such an integral part of northern Nevada.
Go Pack!
Sincere regards,
Brian Sandoval
President
