Though it’s still winter, 推荐杏吧原创 Extension is preparing new and seasoned gardeners with a variety of online and in-person gardening and growing workshops. These workshops for southern Nevada gardeners will be held this month and next, and cover vegetable gardening, pruning and solving gardening problems.

“Gardening might not be top of mind for you when it’s cold, but there’s no better time to learn and get started,” Extension Program Officer Elaine Fagin said.
Details on the workshops include:

  • Jan. 26 and Jan. 28, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Pomegranate, Fig and Other Fruit Trees: Care and Pruning In-Person Class. Extension Master Gardener Yutaka Nomura will teach how to care for trees, keep them healthy and prune for the best fruit production. Part of the class instruction will be indoors, and part will be outdoors, where the demonstration of the basic pruning techniques particular to fig and pomegranate trees will take place.   • Jan. 31, 6 to 8 p.m., Trees and Shrubs: Planning, Planting and Care Zoom Class. Extension Master Gardener Mike Kauzlarich will cover the basics of what you need to know for all phases of your trees’ and shrub's lives. The presentation will cover proper site selection and preparation, as well as the long-term care and maintenance of your valuable plants. Registration is free. .
  • Feb. 8, 6 to 8 p.m., Organic Pest Management Zoom Class. Increase your knowledge of managing the insects in your garden without using chemicals with Extension Master Gardner Lori Evans. Participants will learn ways to manage pests without causing harm to people and pets. Registration is free. .
  • Feb. 11, 9 a.m. to noon, Gardening in Small Places: Vegetable Gardening Zoom Class. Angela O’Callaghan, Ph.D., will explain how to be successful growing food in the Mojave Desert for gardeners of all skill levels. O’Callaghan will discuss what you need to know to get started and have a successful garden this year. Registration is $10. .
  • Feb. 15, 6 to 8 p.m., Growing Under the Stars: Caring for and Pruning Your Pomegranates Zoom Class. Did you know that pomegranate trees have different pruning guidelines than other fruit trees? Extension Master Gardener Coordinator Heather Freeman will present the best practices for caring for and pruning your pomegranate trees for peak production. Registration is free. .
  • Feb. 16 and Feb. 18, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Care and Pruning of Grapes in Southern Nevada In-Person Class. Extension Master Gardeners Yutaka Nomura (Feb. 16) and Don White (Feb. 18) will teach the fundamentals of how to plant, care for and maintain healthy vines. Part of the class will be in a classroom setting, and the latter part will be a hands-on demonstration of how to prune the canes. Registration is $10. . .
