Carson City's The Greenhouse Project will hold a plant sale May 7, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road. There will be several hundred plants available spanning 60 varieties, including vegetables, squash, strawberries, melons, cucumbers, herbs, and perennial and annual flowers. All plants for sale were grown by students and community volunteers through The Greenhouse Project, a nonprofit organization sponsored by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, Nevada Department of Agriculture, Carson City Cultural Commission, Future Farmers of America, The Greenhouse Project 501 (c) (3) corporation, Carson City School District, Nevada Division of State Parks, and numerous businesses and volunteers.

"Proceeds from the sale will go back into growing food for various parts of the community, including organizations that help people in need, the Carson High School culinary program, and the Carson City chapter of Future Farmers of America," said Carson City Extension Educator Lindsay Chichester with University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, who serves on The Greenhouse Project board.

The Greenhouse Project, a nonprofit organization, was conceptualized in 2008 among Cooperative Extension and other partners to sustainably operate a community-based greenhouse and garden, and increase agricultural and horticultural arts and sciences in Carson City. The project is run primarily by AmeriCorps interns, volunteers and Carson High School students. It provides a place for hands-on training, emphasizing environmental stewardship, the importance of outdoor activity, civic engagement and academic achievement. For more information, visit .
