WICSE encourages women engineers with April 25 seminar

'Most Significant Bit' to emphasize increased participation of women in computing and IT programs

Women Into Computer Science and Engineering (WICSE) will present "The Most Significant Bit," a seminar designed to show female students the possibilities that exist in study and work in the field of computer science and engineering. The seminar will be held on April 25 at 4 p.m., in the College of Engineering's Harry Reid Engineering Laboratory.

The seminar is part of a NCWIT Academic Alliance partnership with Symantec to help student-run programs and initiatives that promote increased participation of women in computing and information technology programs. According to WICSE president Catherine Pollock, the seminar is meant "to open (female students' eyes) about how under represented they are in the computer science university environment and technology industry. We will teach them about various fields in computer science and give them a taste of each."

Activities will include watching a 3D printer print, use of drag and drop programming to learn basic computer science algorithms, and use of a Kinect to learn about computer vision.

The seminar will include hors d'oeuvres, a $5 Starbucks gift card and a goody bag with various items, such as T-shirts, phone cases and Rubik's Cubes. A raffle for the event, which runs from 4-6 p.m., will also be held.

Those interested in the event can RSVP at wicse@cse.unr.edu
